JATIMTIMES - Burung pelikan adalah salah satu makhluk menakjubkan di dunia satwa yang dikenal dengan ciri khas paruhnya yang besar dan rongga di bawah paruh yang dapat menampung ikan dan air.
Dengan postur tubuh yang besar dan terbang yang anggun, burung ini telah menjadi simbol keindahan dan keanggunan di banyak budaya, serta memiliki peran penting dalam ekosistem perairan.

Pelikan adalah salah satu burung terbesar di antara burung-burung yang bisa terbang. Burung ini bahkan bisa memiliki panjang 1,8 meter dan rentang sayap sepanjang 3 m, dengan bobot mencapai 13 kg.
Ukuran burung pelikan bergantung pada spesiesnya. Spesies pelikan terpanjang adalah pelikan dalmasia, sedangkan spesies terberat adalah pelikan putih.
Pelikan akan menekuk lehernya rapat-rapat ke tubuhnya ketika terbang karena paruhnya yang besar dan berat. Jika enggak menekuknya, pelikan akan kesusahan untuk terbang dengan baik.
Pelikan merupakan burung yang jinak dan bisa terbang dengan baik meskipun lebih lambat jika dibandingkan dengan burung lainnya.
Spesies yang paling sering dijumpai adalah Pelikan Australia atau Undan Kacamata yang memiliki nama ilmiah Pelecanus conspicillatus.
Pelikan menyukai kawasan di perairan tawar dan asin, danau, dan sungai. Burung ini biasa hidup berkelompok tapi bisa juga hidup sendirian.

Bahkan kadang pelikan juga memangsa burung-burung yang lebih kecil. Pelikan mencari makanannya dengan cara yang berbeda-beda tiap spesiesnya.
Ada yang menyelamkan kepalanya sembari berenang di atas permukaan air, langsung masuk ke dalam air untuk berburu ikan, atau mendekati mangsa secara perlahan lalu memangsanya dengan cepat.
Burung yang satu ini memiliki nafsu makan yang diluar nalar, dimana ia menganggap semua hal yang ia temui sebagai makanan.
Bahkan dalam beberapa momen, Pelikan terciduk hendak memakan manusia, anjing, kucing dan beberapa hewan lainnya.
Burung Pelikan dapat memakan ikan dalam jumlah besar hampir 2 kg setiap harinya.
Keberadaan pelikan di bumi bisa ditelusuri melalui fosil tertuanya yang berumur tiga puluh juta tahun. Fosil tertua burung pelikan itu ditemukan di Perancis.
Beberapa fosil yang lebih muda ditemukan di berbagai wilayah di dunia, seperti, Jerman, Kenya, Australia, India, Peru, dan Carolina Utara.

Begitu ikan masuk ke paruhnya, pelikan menyisihkan air dengan memiringkan paruh untuk menelan ikan yang terperangkap dalam paruhnya.
Burung yang satu ini memiliki kemampuan yang cukup berbeda dengan burung pada umumnya. Dimana, Pelikan memiliki kemampuan berenang. Hal ini didukung karena kakinya yang berselaput bisa mempermudahnya untuk berenang.
Selain itu, burung pelikan juga sering membaluri bulunya dengan minyak yang berasal dari bagian pangkal ekornya. Hal inilah yang membuat burung ini tidak gampang tenggelam.
Burung pelikan memiliki paruh berkantong lebar elastis yang dapat terlipat dan melebar.
Paruh berkantong pelikan tidak berfungsi sebagai tempat penyimpanan makanan jangka panjang, namun berfungsi sebagai tempat pengumpul jangka pendek.
Burung pelikan memakan ikan kecil di perairan. Paruh pelikan sangatlah sensitive karena dapat merasakan keberadaan ikan.
Ketika menangkap ikan, pelikan akan mengambangkan kantongnya dan mengambil ikan serta air dalam jumlah besar. Paruh burung pelikan menampung lebih banyak daripada perutnya.
Perut burung pelikan dapat menampung 3,79 liter, sedangkan paruh burung pelikan dapat menampung hingga 11,46 liter. Artinya, paruh burung pelikan dapat menampung tiga kali lebih banyak daripada perutnya.
Kantong pelikan mampu berkontraksi dan melipat sehingga air mengalir keluar dari mulutnya. Hal tersebut menyisakan ikan yang kemudian akan mereka telan.
Adapun, jika pelikan menangkap lebih banyak ikan daripada yang dapat ditampung perutnya. maka, ikan tersebut akan disimpannya dalam tenggorokan. Pelikan dapat memuntahkan kembali ikan dari kerongkongannya. Hal tersebut biasanya dilakukan oleh bueung pelikan untuk memberi makan anaknya.
